Manuel's blog

It's been a while

I know, and I'm sorry. I never developed the habit to write consistently on a platform. I occasionally post on Mastodon or Reddit but that's about it.

In the last few weeks I kept finding myself reflecting about the Internet and how most of the people nowadays use it only through big cloud providers and mega corporations, that do not even pretend anymore to actually care about the users.

I understand that nostalgia of the web 1.0 I grown with probably plays a good part in the overall feeling but still, I truly believe that a network made by decentralised and independent nodes1 is the best Internet.

I spent some time thinking how I can contribute and by which means.
I'm not a creator but I sometimes there are thoughts, feedbacks, reviews or experiences I want to share. Even if I use some well-known online services I do not want one of them to be my main point of presence on the Internet.
I still have my own personal domain and hosting that I regularly pay and I looked a few times for a simple platform to publish content (like WriteFreely for example), but I never found anything that didn't require some kind of maintenance that I know would become an hassle sooner or later.

I also got interested in the Gemini Project because I despise how every web page has become heavy, bloated or - even worse - some kind of web application. I used to love navigating the web and it's becoming harder and annoying to do.

So, here I am back to Mataroa. I just reread the methodology and I'm positive this is the right place for me for the time being.

I know I'm only a drop in the ocean and me trying to fight the centralisation and slopification2 of the Internet probably won't make any difference.
Still, I try to live by what I believe.

  1. I still don't know about the Feediverse as much as I'd like, but I plan to.
